2023 Event Schedule

The first round of activities are up on our calendar for 2023.

Each of these events are open to the public. Non-Member participants must fill out the Guest Waiver form and have it initialed by the Shoot Director so that we are in compliance with our club’s insurance requirements.

Spring Clean Up

To get the range in shape for the upcoming good weather, we will be having our annual spring cleaning on April 16th.

We start at 9 AM although you might want to arrive early for coffee and donuts. Bring shovels, rakes, brush clearing tools, weed whackers, hammers, screw guns, etc. There will also be tools available for use.

The weather is unpredictable in April so be prepared for what will come. While all members are encouraged to help keep our club in good order, new probationary members will want to attend to satisfy their work obligation.

All ranges will be closed until work is completed, usually by early-to-mid afternoon. One the planned tasks are completed the ranges will be cleared and opened.

Youth Shoot

The Youth Shooting Program is back and we’re looking to get a full year of events into 2023. The first activity will be April 23rd and we’ve schedule one event per month through October.

The program begins at 9:00 AM and provides instruction in the safe handling and use of many types of firearms. We start with a short classroom session stressing the safe handling of firearms. Hands-on shooting takes place outside giving youth the opportunity to shoot club-supplied rifles, shotguns, muzzle loaders, and handguns in a one-on-one, coached environment. Afterward, participants will learn basic firearms cleaning and then enjoy a BBQ lunch.

A parent or guardian must be on site with the youth participant. Youth should be no older than eighteen but old enough to handle firearms and understand range safety (generally at least 8 years old). Ammunition is provided by the club and all necessary equipment will also be available. Eye and ear protection are required while on the range. You may bring your own or use ours.

There is NO COST for this event.

First-time participants are requested to arrive by 8:45 AM to complete the required paperwork.

Members are reminded that the indoor range is closed from 8:30 AM until noon while the clubhouse is in use. The firing line is covered so this event is rain or shine.

Pin Shoot

We will once again plan for three Pin Shoots this year, starting on May 13th. All ranges will be closed from 9:00 AM until Noon while participants compete to shoot five bowling pins off of a table is as short a time as possible. This is a great way to test your composure once the heart gets pumping.

The outdoor ranges will reopen for club members once all the equipment is cleared from down range.

Hunter Education Field Day

Sunset Mountain is one of the locations for the NH Hunter Education Field Day. An all-day class is schedule for April 29th with another date to follow, TBD, later in the year. The indoor range will be closed while the clubhouse is in use for the class – typically 8 AM to 4 PM.

Registration for the event is through NH Fish and Game. See https://wildlife.state.nh.us/hunting/hunter-ed.html for more information.

Lemon Shoot

We’ve scheduled our annual Lemon Shoot for September 17th. This is a long range competition with targets at from 100 through 500 yards.

Public Sight-in Day

It is a long way off, but we have put the 2023 Public Sight-in Day on our calendar. Set aside October 15th as the day when Sunset Mountain is open to the public for sighting in rifles before hunting season.

Shotgun Tournament

Our Shotgun Tournament dates are not newly-added to the calendar because they’ve never stopped! Sunday, March 26th will see another monthly tournament starting at 10:00 AM. Note that some new members will be conduction safety training at the same time, so participants may have to pause while that session is on the range. The outdoor range will remain open on Sunday and the Shotgun competition will go on!

Participants should plan to arrive a little early, especially if you haven’t shot before. Everyone should bring eye and ear protection, a shotgun with 60 or so rounds of ammo, $8, and a sense of humor.

The Tournaments will continue at the end of each month all year, assuming we don’t have extreme weather conditions.

Pistol League

Summer Pistol League will begin in May. The official start date will be scheduled once the winter league completes, so keep an eye on the calendar if you are interested.

Weather permitting, we meet weekly every Wednesday, with our matches starting at 6:00 PM. If needed, as second line will follow (probably around 6:45 PM). Cost is a $10 registration fee for the season plus $4.00 per match. The schedule will start with two weeks of practice and then weekly matches until everyone has had a chance to fill the score sheet.

Separate competitions are held for .22, under .40 iron sights, under .40 sighted, over .40 iron sights, and over .40 sighted. Some league members shoot in more than one category, typically by shooting more than one match in a night. The season is followed by an awards dinner.

Check back for more dates and activities, posted to the calendar as they are approved by the membership.
